New Stadium for Chesterfield

July 3, 2008

The proposed new Stadium for Chesterfield FC has been given the go ahead !

The majority of the audience attending the meeting at the Winding Wheel held by the council gave rapturous applause to the decision.

This will give a big injection of cash , jobs and exposure to Chesterfield as a whole in our opinion at Chesterfield.TV

The scheme is estimated to cost approximately 12 Million Pounds.

Included in the plans is the stadium itself, a 10,500 all seater stadium, a new tesco’s, hotels, a business complex, parking and more.

The site for this complex is known to most living in the town as the site has been undergoing clearance in past years. It was originally the Demaglass Company on Sheffield road on the east side of Chesterfield.

Cllr Keith Morgan was quoted to have said: “This is regeneration on a significant scale and with this comes significant employment that will bring visitors and wealth into the town.”

The operation of construction and organisation is to be undertaken by wilsonbowden.co.uk , who are owned by Barratt Developments PLC

Although the council have agreed, the Government must rubber stamp this proposal to make sure it becomes a reality. Then the rest of the funds will need to be raised from potential investors and businesses.

One unusual point was that Tesco is an essential part of the plan. They are proposing to be on the site, where they will have more than double the parking spaces than the football club & one would imagine are leaving their current site located nearby.

They would however gain a much more prominent position, some local businesses were complaining it could cause safety issues and lead to a downturn in local small businesses fortune. These were ignored by the council.

The complaints were small though, the petitions only contained a couple of hundred names against and clearly the positives largely outweigh the negatives, for the town and for the fortunes of our football club.

We will keep you updated with future developments.
