A new drug can double the life expectancy of people suffering from a lung disease caused by exposure to asbestos.

Around 1,700 people each year in the UK are affected by mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the membranes around the lungs. Victims are left struggling to breath and in great pain.

The scientists behind the breakthrough stress they have not found a cure, but say their treatment improves the quality of life for sufferers and makes breathing easier.

The disease affects five times more men than women and is typically found in people aged between 50 and 70. Experts fear the disease is on the rise and by 2020 the number of new cases every year could double.

Many sufferers were exposed to asbestos while working in heavy industry such as ship-building. The disease can take up to 40 years to show symptoms. Mesothelioma is difficult to treat, not very responsive to radiotherapy, and is usually inoperable.

A patient treated with the traditional anti-cancer drugs could expect to live between six and eight months.

Research carried out at Newcastle University has found patients treated with a new drug combination have survived for around 13 to 14 months and in a handful of cases, for three years or more.

It seems though the British Goverment are turning their backs on pleural plaques sufferers, as many hundreds protested outside the house of commons in October last year, 2008.

If you need to consult qualified mesothelioma solicitors for free advice if you think you have an asbestos related claim, go no further than visiting : www.mesotheliomasolicitors.org

James Hardy, 31, was found dying at his home in Bradgate Croft, Hasland, in the early hours of Saturday 6th December.

Emergency services were called to his home around 2am on Saturday.

Paramedics were told he was suffering breathing difficulties, but he died at the scene and was later found to have been stabbed in the chest.

Mr.Hardy was a former disgraced Derbyshire Police Officer. Two years previously he has been working at Police HQ in Derby and caught passing on sensitive information.

Police set up a covert surveillance operation as suspicion was that Hardy was abusing access to the Police National Computer.

In May 2006 they discovered Hardy was intending to pass on the addresses and details of a number of people to Martin Jolley, a former boxer.

Jolley, who had a string of convictions for violence, including one for assaulting a police officer, was involved in arguments with all of the men named.

Hardy admitted a charge of conspiracy to commit misfeasance in public office and was given a 28-week jail term, suspended for two years.

Unusually the Court of Appeal increased the sentence to 9 months’ imprisonment, and Hardy was stripped of 25 per cent of his police pension. Normally courts are extremely lenient on police officers.

Michelle Doherty , of Lawn Villas, Calow, (Hardy’s then girlfriend) , 27, appeared in Chesterfield Magistrates Court accused of his murder on December 8th.

She spoke only to confirm her name and address and did not enter a plea to the murder charge.

There was no application for bail, and she was remanded in custody to appear before a judge at Nottingham Crown Court on December 15.
