Are we miserable?

September 7, 2008

People living in North East Derbyshire are amongst the most miserable in the country, according to a new study.

mr. happy

Researchers named the area as the third least cheerful place to live in the whole of the UK !
But the findings of a happiness table — which put NE Derbyshire bottom in England in 271st place, below Chesterfield and Bolsover at 259th — were dismissed by council chiefs and entertainers across the area.

Graham Baxter, leader of NE Derbyshire District Council, said: “It appears that only a very few people from our district were interviewed and the questions weren’t about the place itself, but more about how people were feeling when they took part.”

He added that there had been a lot of independent research about the district which showed people thought “NE Derbyshire. was a great place to live.”

“We’ve beautiful countryside, a strong sense of community, are one of the safest areas, stage excellent events and our economy is on the up. Together with many, I’m very happy.”

The findings come from research presented at the Royal Geographical Society’s annual conference, which took place in London last week.

Clearly very few people were asked and there is a good feel to Chesterfield which everyone would feel visiting the town from outside.

We also have very low crime . One thing we have too much of is rain though! But that can be said about the whole of the UK.

Using data from the British Household Panel Survey — where people were asked about their sense of wellbeing — university researchers from Sheffield and Manchester mapped the UK’s happiest places.
